How to Propagate a Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Propagating a Snake Plant is one of the easiest ways to expand your collection or share with friends. These hardy plants can be propagated through cuttings, division, or even in water. Hereโs a step-by-step guide to each method.
1. Propagation by Leaf Cuttings
Leaf cuttings are the most common method, and they work well if you want multiple small plants. However, keep in mind that variegated Snake Plants often lose their patterns when grown from cuttings.
- Choose a healthy leaf and cut it near the base with a clean knife or scissors.
- Cut the leaf into 7โ10 cm sections. Keep track of which end was closest to the soil โ this must face downward when replanting.
- Let the cuttings dry for 1โ2 days so the wounds callus and resist rotting.
- Plant the cuttings upright in a cactus/succulent mix, burying them about 2โ3 cm deep.
- Water lightly and place in bright, indirect light.
Tip: Mark the bottom end of each cutting right after you slice โ planting them upside down wonโt work.

2. Propagation by Division
Division is the quickest and most reliable way to create new Snake Plants, especially for maintaining variegation. This works best when your plant is mature and root-bound.
- Remove the entire plant from its pot and gently shake off the soil.
- Locate the rhizomes (thick, root-like stems) that connect the leaves.
- Use a sharp, sterilised knife to cut the rhizome into sections, each with at least 2โ3 leaves and healthy roots attached.
- Plant each division into its own pot filled with succulent soil mix.
- Wait a few days before watering to allow cut areas to heal.
Tip: Division is the only method that guarantees variegated Snake Plants will keep their patterns.

3. Propagation in Water
Propagating Snake Plants in water is fun to watch and a great way for beginners to experiment. It takes longer than soil propagation but lets you see the roots develop clearly.
- Cut a healthy leaf into sections as you would for soil propagation.
- Place the cuttings in a glass of clean water, making sure only the bottom ends are submerged.
- Change the water every 5โ7 days to prevent rot.
- Once roots reach 3โ5 cm, transfer cuttings into soil to continue growing.
Tip: Propagation in water is slower, but perfect if you want to observe root growth up close.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does propagation take? Root growth usually appears within 3โ6 weeks, depending on method and season.
- Can you propagate Snake Plants without roots? Yes, leaf cuttings grow new roots from the cut edge once placed in soil or water.
- Will variegation stay? Only division guarantees variegation. Leaf cuttings typically grow into solid green plants.
- Is water propagation safe long-term? Itโs better as a temporary step โ once roots are established, transfer to soil for long-term health.
- When is the best time to propagate? Spring and summer are ideal, when the plant is actively growing.
