Liquid fertiliser: what it is and how to use it
Liquid fertiliser is plant food that’s already dissolved in water. Once it’s mixed and watered in, the nutrients reach the roots straight away, making it the quickest way to feed plants in pots, vegetable patches, garden beds and lawns. It’s also easy to measure and adjust as your plants grow.
Our liquid fertiliser range
- All Purpose Plant Liquid Fertiliser (NPK 20-20-20 with micro nutrients): a complete, balanced liquid fertiliser for vegetables, herbs, flowers, shrubs and fruit trees. Suits almost every plant except cacti. 1 L, 4 L and 20 L.
- Citrus Fertiliser (NPK 6-2-12 + trace elements): a liquid citrus fertiliser for lemons, limes, oranges and mandarins, higher in potassium for fruit. 1 L, 4 L and 20 L.
- Lawn Grow (NPK 7-1-1.5 + iron): a 2 L hose-on liquid lawn fertiliser that connects to your garden hose.
- Indoor Plant Food (NPK 16-4-14): liquid fertiliser for indoor plants, where 100 mL makes 100 L.
- Cactus & Succulent Plant Food (NPK 2-7-7): a low-nitrogen liquid feed for cacti and succulents. 1 L and 2 L.
- Hydroponic Nutrients A & B with Cal-Mag: two-part liquid nutrients for hydroponic systems, plus calcium and magnesium.
How to use liquid fertiliser
- Check the rate on the label and measure the concentrate. The Precision 1L Fertiliser Sprayer makes measuring easy.
- Mix it into a watering can, pump sprayer or hose-end sprayer.
- Water it in around the roots. If the soil is bone dry, water with plain water first.
- Repeat at the interval on the label while plants are actively growing.
Feed more in spring and summer when plants are growing fast, and ease off over winter.
Liquid or granular fertiliser?
Granular and slow-release fertilisers break down over weeks, so plants wait for their food. Liquid fertiliser is available straight away, and you can dose each plant to what it needs, which suits pots, seedlings, vegetables and anything that looks hungry now. Many gardeners use both: a slow-release base in the soil, topped up with liquid feed through the growing season.
How to choose the best liquid fertiliser
Match the NPK ratio to the plant. A balanced ratio like 20-20-20 suits most leafy plants and vegetables. Citrus and fruiting plants want more potassium, lawns want more nitrogen, and cacti want very little nitrogen at all. When plants are flowering or fruiting heavily, switch to a bloom feed such as Advanced Formula NPK 4-18-38.
