Choosing and using hydroponic nutrients
Hydroponic plants grow without soil, so everything they need comes from the nutrient solution. A good hydroponic fertiliser supplies nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, plus calcium, magnesium and trace elements, in a form roots can take up straight away. CompleteGrow hydroponic nutrients are made in Australia from natural mineral raw materials.
Why two-part A & B nutrients?
Some nutrients react with each other when they’re concentrated, such as calcium with sulphates and phosphates, and drop out of the solution. A two-part hydroponic nutrient keeps them in separate bottles until they’re diluted in your reservoir, so every nutrient stays available to your plants.
How to mix hydroponic nutrients
- Fill your reservoir with water.
- Add Part A at the rate on the label and stir well.
- Add Part B at the rate on the label and stir again. Never mix Part A and Part B together undiluted.
- Check the pH and EC (strength) of the solution. Most hydroponic crops grow best at a pH of about 5.5 to 6.5.
- Top up with fresh nutrient solution as plants drink, and change the whole reservoir regularly.
Which hydroponic nutrients do I need?
- Hydroponic Nutrients A & B: the base feed for leafy greens, herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums and strawberries, in 1 L and 5 L. For bigger systems, choose 20 L Hydroponic Nutrients A & B.
- Cal-Mag: extra calcium and magnesium for hungry crops and for soft, rain or filtered water. Works in hydroponics and soil, alongside any feed. Read what Cal-Mag does and when to use it.
- Advanced Formula NPK 4-18-38 with calcium and magnesium: a three-part flowering and fruiting formula for tomatoes, strawberries, capsicums and other fruiting crops, in hydroponics or soil. 1 kg to 20 kg.
Feeding leafy and fruiting crops
Leafy crops like lettuce, spinach and herbs use more nitrogen for fast leaf growth. Fruiting crops like tomatoes and strawberries need more phosphorus, potassium and calcium once they flower.
