Do Capsicums Grow All Year Round?

Capsicum is a warm-season plant. While it can technically live more than one year in warm climates, it is usually grown as an annual in most parts of Australia.

  • Tropical regions (NT, Far North QLD): Capsicum can grow almost year-round, though wet season humidity may reduce yields.
  • Subtropical regions (SE QLD, Northern NSW): Capsicum grows from spring through autumn. Winter growth is limited unless protected.
  • Temperate & cool regions (NSW, VIC, SA, TAS): Capsicum grows only in the warmer months. Frost will kill plants, so they are treated as annuals.

In warm zones, older capsicum plants can continue producing into their second or third year, but fruiting usually declines. Most gardeners replant each spring for the best harvests.

Seasonal Growth Patterns

  • Spring: Main planting season. Plants establish quickly with balanced fertiliser.
  • Summer: Heavy fruiting season. Needs high potassium and calcium to keep fruit firm.
  • Autumn: In warmer regions, plants keep producing with regular feeding.
  • Winter: Growth slows or stops in southern states. In the tropics, plants may continue but yields drop.

If you want year-round production, stagger plantings in spring and summer so younger plants replace older ones. In colder regions, use greenhouses, cloches, or grow indoors under lights.

Fertiliser Needs by Season

  • Spring: Balanced NPK fertiliser for root and leaf development.
  • Summer: Increase potassium and magnesium to support heavy cropping.
  • Autumn: Continue moderate feeding to extend the harvest.
  • Winter: Feeding only needed in northern regions where plants remain active.

Capsicum Year-Round FAQ

  • Are capsicums perennial? In warm climates they can survive multiple years, but most gardeners replant annually.
  • Do capsicums grow in winter? Only in frost-free areas. In southern states, plants die off with cold weather.
  • How do I keep capsicum producing all year? Grow in warm regions, or use protected environments like greenhouses.
  • Will older capsicum plants still fruit? Yes, but production slows after the first year.
  • Should I fertilise capsicum in winter? Only if plants are still actively growing in warm zones.
