How to choose and use indoor plant fertiliser

Indoor plants live in a small pot of potting mix, so they use up its nutrients within a few months. A regular liquid indoor plant fertiliser puts them back, keeping leaves green and glossy and new growth coming. CompleteGrow indoor plant food is a water-soluble concentrate made in Australia from natural mineral raw materials: measure 1 mL per litre, mix and water in.

Which indoor plant fertiliser do I need?

Start with the NPK ratio on the label. Nitrogen (N) drives leaf growth, phosphorus (P) supports roots and flowers, and potassium (K) supports overall plant health. Match the ratio to what your houseplant grows most:

  • Leafy houseplants such as monstera, pothos, philodendron, fiddle leaf fig, rubber plant, ZZ plant and ferns: Indoor Plant Food (NPK 16-4-14). Higher nitrogen for more, bigger leaves.
  • Flowering indoor plants such as peace lily, anthurium and hoya: All Purpose Indoor Plant Food (NPK 20-20-20), a balanced feed for leaves and flowers.
  • Cacti and succulents, including jade and snake plants: Cactus & Succulent Plant Food (NPK 2-7-7). Low in nitrogen, so growth stays firm and compact.

How to use liquid fertiliser for indoor plants

  1. If the potting mix is bone dry, water the plant first. Feeding dry roots can burn them.
  2. Mix 1 mL of concentrate per litre of water in your watering can.
  3. Water it in until a little drains from the bottom of the pot, then empty the saucer.

The nutrients are already dissolved, so liquid indoor plant food reaches the roots straight away, and you control exactly how much each plant gets.

How often to fertilise indoor plants

Feed at the rate on the label while your plants are putting out new leaves, usually spring through to autumn. In winter, when growth slows and light is lower, feed less often or pause until spring. Plants in bright spots grow faster and use more food than plants in low light. After repotting, wait a few weeks before feeding, as fresh potting mix usually contains fertiliser.

Signs your houseplant needs feeding, or has had too much

Pale older leaves, small new leaves and slow growth in the warmer months can all mean a plant is hungry. Brown, crispy leaf tips or a white crust on the potting mix usually mean too much fertiliser. Flush the pot with plain water and feed less often.
